Sports Offered at Southside Middle School
BASKETBALL
Competitive middle school basketball is an exciting and dynamic environment where young athletes develop their skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. This level of basketball serves as a crucial foundation for future success in high school and beyond, fostering both physical and personal growth.
In October, our middle school students play one day a week in intramural games. This is a great time for all the players to practice and learn more about the sport. Starting at the beginning of February, students play in a competitive travel basketball league with area schools, and these games usually finish by the end of March.
FOOTBALL
Middle school football serves as a crucial stepping stone for young athletes, offering them the opportunity to develop their skills, teamwork, and love for the game. Typically, middle school football programs include players aged 9 to 12, providing an environment that balances competition with personal growth.
Our middle school football players practice once a week during the school day, and practice twice a week after school. Their season starts in the middle of August and concludes towards the end of September.
VOLLEYBALL
Middle school volleyball is an exciting and dynamic sport that serves as an introduction to the game for many young athletes. Typically played by students in grades 4th through 6th, this level of volleyball emphasizes skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
Our middle school players practice twice a week during the school day for 45 minutes. The girls play in four tournaments with area schools throughout September and October. These practices and games offer a supportive environment where they can build skills, make lasting friendships, and cultivate a love for the game that may continue into high school and beyond.
BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL
Middle school softball and baseball are exciting and foundational sports programs for young athletes, typically catering to students in grades 4th-6th. These programs play a crucial role in developing skills, teamwork, and a love for the game.
Our students practice these fundamental baseball and softball skills once a week as an enrichment class for 45 minutes, and they are able to take part in this enrichment class all year long. It's always fun to see the growth that students have gained from the beginning of the year to the end! Middle school softball and baseball programs are essential for nurturing young athletes' physical, social, and emotional development. They provide a platform for students to learn the fundamentals of the sport, enjoy friendly competition, and develop lifelong friendships, all while fostering a love for the game that can carry into their high school years and beyond.
ARCHERY
Competitive middle school archery is a growing sport that combines focus, discipline, and athletic skill to create an engaging experience for young athletes. This sport is typically part of school-sponsored extracurricular activities or community-based archery programs and is designed to help middle school students develop fundamental archery skills, learn sportsmanship, and foster team spirit.
Our Archery team practices 3 times a week during the school day, and 1-2 times after school a week depending on when competitions take place. Amber Young is the coach for all Archery Team members 4th-12th.
