January 2026 has been designated as School Board Member Recognition Month, a time to honor the dedicated individuals who serve on local school boards and answer the call to lead public education in their communities.

School board members play a critical role in guiding school districts by establishing policies, overseeing budgets, and ensuring students have the opportunities and resources they need to succeed. Elected by the community, these leaders serve as the voice of local priorities and help shape the future of public education.

This year’s theme, “Answering the Call,” highlights the commitment school board members demonstrate by stepping forward to serve and making thoughtful, informed decisions on behalf of students, families, and staff.

“School board members answer the call to serve with dedication and purpose,” said Dion Stevens, Superintendent. “Their leadership helps guide our District through all of the successes and challenges, always keeping students at the center of every decision.”

Throughout the month of January, Southside School District will join districts across Arkansas in recognizing school board members through special acknowledgments and activities, which may include:

  • A proclamation recognizing School Board Member Recognition Month

  • Recognition during a regularly scheduled school board meeting

  • Social media features highlighting individual board members and their service

School Board Member Recognition Month also provides an opportunity to inform the public about the responsibilities of school boards and the vital role they play in local governance and student success.
