The Southside School District Board of Education has officially adopted a resolution recognizing April as the Month of the Military Child, a national observance dedicated to celebrating the strength, resilience, and sacrifices of children in military families.

Throughout the month, Southside School District is highlighting the vital role military‑connected students play within the school community and acknowledge the unique challenges they experience as their families serve the nation.

As part of the observance, the district celebrated Purple Up Day on Thursday, April 9. Students, staff, and community members were encouraged to wear purple - a color representing all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces by blending Army green, Navy blue, Air Force blue, Marine Corps red, Coast Guard blue, and Space Force black.

Schools in the district are participating in activities designed to honor and support military families. These included the creation of a Wall of Heroes, allowing students to recognize family members who serve or have served in the military, and classroom discussions centered on the meaning and significance of the Month of the Military Child and Purple Up Day.

Superintendent Dion Stevens emphasized the importance of recognizing military-connected students and their families.

“During the Month of the Military Child, we proudly recognize the strength, resilience, and sacrifice of the students whose families serve our nation,” Stevens said. “Our military‑connected children show remarkable courage as they adapt to new schools, new communities, and the challenges of military life. As a district, we are deeply grateful for their service alongside their families, and we remain committed to supporting them, honoring their experiences, and ensuring they feel valued and welcomed in every classroom.”

District leaders hope the activities will inspire the entire school community to recognize, appreciate, and support military‑connected students and their families.
