“If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.” -Admiral William H. McRaven Students recently completed a book study on Admiral McRaven’s book “Make Your Bed.” It is a New York best-seller and is based off his inspiring graduation speech in 2014. The book revolves around 10 “fundamental life lessons.” Each student received a copy of the book. During advisory, students read the book, completed thought-provoking assessments, and self-reflected on how their actions affect their futures. They were also challenged to complete specific action steps that coincided with each chapter. Even though students were not excited about a book study, they walked away with new insight to create a better #futurestory. Senior Tori Poole says “It made me look at life from a different perspective.” Junior Carrigan Cossey says “It motivated me to start making my bed every day, be more productive and not lazy.” Senior Krislynn Duncan says “It forced me to look at the pros and cons of my actions.” Please talk to your kids about this book and ask them how it has changed their perspective and what lessons they learned from Admiral McRaven. A group of High School students have been working to bring to light the importance of Mental Health Awareness to the school and the community. They began by forming a club at school, which has since become the first chapter of the Bring Change To Mind Club in Arkansas. Students have researched and found several tools and resources that will aid others who may struggle with mental health issues. A committee has presented their ideas to several businesses in the community to help generate funds to provide some of these resources. Along with traditional resources, the students are excited to bring to fruition their plan to adopt a therapy dog for the High School! The hypoallergenic dog has been donated by a generous Southside family, but funding has been secured from generous sponsors to send the dog for the appropriate training, vet fees, and any other expenses that will incur. We look forward to this wonderful opportunity for our students!
