Junior high science students recently traded their textbooks for slinkies in a memorable hands-on lab experience in Mrs. Jessica Vines' science classroom. Working together on the classroom floor, students brought the science of waves to life - stretching, compressing, and sending pulses down metal springs to observe wave behavior firsthand.
During the lab, students practiced identifying key wave properties including wavelength, amplitude, and frequency - concepts that can be difficult to visualize from a diagram alone. By generating both transverse waves (side-to-side motion) and longitudinal waves (push-and-pull compression), students could directly compare how different types of waves travel.
Hands-on experiences like this one help students build lasting understanding of scientific concepts by connecting classroom learning to physical exploration. Mrs. Vines' lab day is a great example of science education in action here at the junior high.
